Seattle building history was recently made when we raised one of the state’s first cross laminate timber (CLT) constructed homes in Madison Park. The extra-thick CLT material was set in position by a site-stationed crane just three months ago, virtually finishing the home’s exterior and interior walls, flooring and roof. With the project nearing completion, it continues to garner attention from local and national media for its energy efficiency, structural durability and unique design.
The 1,485sf 3bd/2ba project was designed by atelierjones to meet BUILT GREEN 4* requirements while integrating Passive House construction techniques such as high-performance windows and doors, increased insulation and triple-paned windows. Its exterior features Shou Sugi Ban cladding, a traditional Japanese method of treating wood by charring it and then sealing it with oil, making the material resistant to fire, rot and pests. The home’s cantilevered second story creates a stunning yet functional ground-level carport, and the rooftop terrace delivers neighborhood views and built-in planters for urban gardening.
